So Roots Shoot Spring 2016

SO ROOTS BAND is a truly gifted and passionate group of musicians I had the honor to meet and work with. With a Reggae influence with the Hawaiian island twist the vibe of their music is a warm weather cruising and lounging essential (if you have ever been to Hawai'i you would understand). I initially met Pono when he would come in to "talk story" with me about audio/video production the year I taught at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, HI.

The session was more off-the-cuff and lifestyle image shooting for website and promotions. I did not want to have them roast in the heat so I opted to shoot in natural light for 5-10 min intervals and in the shade for another 5-10 for them to cool down. We shot in the Kakaako district where there are beautiful murals painted by artists every year during POW WOW HAWAI'I. This was more of a "feeler" or engagement session where I got to know each member and their nuances since I had a little less than an hour to tackle some different looks and locations. I wanted to make sure I captured their laid back, fun, good natured, and quirky (I mean it in a good way) demeanor. This was also a chance for me to coach the guys on how to pose and present themselves in front of the camera since we have a few more sessions lined up when I return home to Hawai'i.
